Shhh…. Keep Quiet About This

Thursday, August 31st, 2006

Today at work one of the guys asked where my van was. So I told him it was at home. He asked if it was going to be on Pimp My Ride. Don’t be daft, I thought. They never have Anglias on there. Well, how wrong I was. Neil at 105Speed.com had secretly been involved in a project with MTV and Pimp My Ride. He said he was sworn to secrecy, but now, the secrets out.

1st showing :- September 17th 22:00 on MTV UK

2nd showing :- November 23rd on Channel 5 (Time to be confirmed)

Old Skool Ford Northern Meet

Thursday, August 31st, 2006

It looks like the OSF Northern Meet is starting to take off. It was the vans first motorway run since changing the cams. It’s as lumpy as hell so will need remapping. I’m getting a new exhaust on Monday from Tony Laws in Leeds, and he’s installing a new lambda, as mine has died, so I’ll do the tuning after then. I did have a bit of fun on the way back. Mark, a mate of Simons, has a mint RS1600i, and he wanted to race from some lights. It was raining, so it made it more fun. His excuse for me beating him by a mile was that he couldn’t get the power down. Neither could I! Simon drove the van round the pub car park, and I think it’s given him the bug to get another Anglia, but this time modified. He didn’t want to give me the keys back!

We had a good turn out for a dark miserable wednesday night. Eleven cars of all different shapes and sizes: Anglia Van, Cortina Mk1, Cortina Mk2, Escort Mk1, two Escort Mk2s, Escort Mk3 RS1600i, Fiesta Mk1, Fiesta Mk2, Capri Mk3, and a Sierra. A couple weren’t strictly old skool, but they were Fords! And much respect to Tim and Lol who came over from Liverpool in their 1200 Mk1 Tina!

If you’re ooop north and are wanting to join in, get over to OSF, and the Northern Meet Forum Thread. We may be having a cruse one weekend as the nights are getting dark earlier.

Ultra Rare ‘Breadbox’ Anglia?

Tuesday, August 29th, 2006

breadbin2.jpgWell, I’ve never seen one of these before. Kiwifella from the popular 105Speed forum spotted this whilst on a drive 50 miles from his home in New Zealand. He went back with a camera a week later to take some snaps, and hopefully purchase it (with permission from his wife!).

If you know any more about the conversion, please pop along to the forum and let them know! The only clues are photos of similar ones racing, but no one knows who built it. There are more pictures over on 105Speed.

Extreme Drag Racing

How many times have you been to the Pod and seen a car struggle to get grip before running an 11 second quarter mile. A blue MK2 Escort rings a bell. But have you seen a car get so much grip that it does this….?

Installing Two Litre Cams In A 1.8 Litre Zetec

Monday, August 28th, 2006

My engine was suffering from a serious oil leak - oil was spraying onto the cam pullys and spraying around the engine. I’d guessed the cam oil seals were the cause, and thought I’d fit two litre cams at the same time. I managed to purchase a pair of two litre cams from ebay for the bargain price of £12! The only cam I’ve ever changed was in an A Series engine in a Mini I used to own. That was a bit of a pain due to the location, so installing a pair in an OHC engine should be simple. And it was.

Tuning Anglias and Cortinas

Thursday, August 24th, 2006
angliafinishedunformatted-1.jpgYou may have seen this book before, especially if you visited the site before our recent changes. It occasionally comes up for sale on ebay too. Now you don’t need to. It’s all on our technical wiki. It’s the first of the few technical books I had on the old site. I know a few of you have been visiting for the rally preparation articles. They’ll be next.
If you’ve got an Anglia or Cortina and want to do some period tuning, you’ll find this in the wiki.

…until the Old Skool Ford Northern Meet…

A few of us turned up at The Old Post Office just off junction 38 of the M1 a couple of months ago for the first OSF Northern Meet. Hopefully this month will be even bigger with more and more people promising to come. So, if you’re not doing anything on Wednesday 30th August, come to the Old Post Office from 8pm for a natter and look at some old cars.

Stolen From RS Owners National Day at Donnington

Tuesday, August 22nd, 2006

Keep your eyes peeled for a black MK2 RS2000, registration CJX 439V stolen from the recent National Day at Donnington. It has a beige interior, stainless exhaust and has only done 37,000. According to posts on various websites, thefts from car shows is becoming commonplace.

No Shit Sherlock…!

Monday, August 21st, 2006

What is this country coming to? I was out doing some work on the car, and I needed to use a Stanley-type Knife. It was a plastic disposable one with the break off blades. I had to take the blade out as I was scraping some masking tape off the window, when I noticed the words ‘Warning: Sharp Blade’. No shit. It’s a KNIFE. That got me thinking about all the other places you see disclamers that have come straight from the Ministry of the Bleeding Obvious.

Watch the adverts on TV and there are SO many disclaimers that you wonder who thinks them up. Here are some examples:

There was an ad a few months ago for a magazine with some bad Village People lookalikes singing a spoof of YMCA. Halfway though, up popped the words ‘Not The Real Village People’.

The current crunchy nut cornflake advert with the man jumping on the back of an Irish Wolfhound to ride home as quickly as possible. Up comes the disclaimer ‘Do not try this with your pet at home’. Yes, my Persian Cat is the size of a horse and I do it on a daily basis.

Childrens films: ‘Contains mild slapstick’. ‘Contains scenes of dangerous peril’. Come on! It’s a certificate U. You don’t need to be warned about stuff like that! I doubt little Timmy will complain.

It’s all down to the blame culture that exists. Nothing is ever YOUR fault. It’s always someone elses. You now get paid compensation for being stupid. There’s an advert for a compensation company on tv at the moment, and the guy says ‘I was installing an alarm system and I was actually given the wrong type of ladder’. A couple of points here. Note he said ‘I was given’ shifting the blame from him. If he was a competent alarm fitter, he would have realised he had the wrong type of ladder. If that’s the case and he still went up it, then he’s stupid. He’d have said to himself ‘Oh I’ll risk it’. When it slipped and he crushed his arm he would have thought ‘Not my fault. HE gave me it’. Where will it end?

This country needs to have a disclaimer. May contain nuts.
