The Friday Flick - Rallying Escorts On Ice

Friday, November 3rd, 2006

This clip is taken from an old Rallying video I have, and luckily someone has put this section on You Tube. Take two Mk2 Escorts and a Fiesta, add a couple of rally drivers, then have a blat around a frozen lake for the cameras. Synchronised sliding at its best.

Installing Two Litre Cams In A 1.8 Litre Zetec

Monday, August 28th, 2006

My engine was suffering from a serious oil leak - oil was spraying onto the cam pullys and spraying around the engine. I’d guessed the cam oil seals were the cause, and thought I’d fit two litre cams at the same time. I managed to purchase a pair of two litre cams from ebay for the bargain price of £12! The only cam I’ve ever changed was in an A Series engine in a Mini I used to own. That was a bit of a pain due to the location, so installing a pair in an OHC engine should be simple. And it was.

Tuning Anglias and Cortinas

Thursday, August 24th, 2006
angliafinishedunformatted-1.jpgYou may have seen this book before, especially if you visited the site before our recent changes. It occasionally comes up for sale on ebay too. Now you don’t need to. It’s all on our technical wiki. It’s the first of the few technical books I had on the old site. I know a few of you have been visiting for the rally preparation articles. They’ll be next.
If you’ve got an Anglia or Cortina and want to do some period tuning, you’ll find this in the wiki.

Tuning Your Megasquirt

Sunday, August 13th, 2006

The hardest thing about deciding to go with the Megasquirt ECU is getting a decent map. I’ve spent many hours with a local megasquirt guru driving up and down our local bypass with him sat with the laptop on his knee changing the settings. We’d managed to get an ok drivable one last time, but that was with the 803 green injectors, which were far too big for the engine. Since swapping over to the Peugeot 205GTi ones, we’ve not had the chance to do anything. The car drove ok, so I was happy, but when ‘logging’ from within Megatune, it showed that my map was anything but perfect. The O2 log would swing from mega lean to mega rich.I’d not had any luck with the autotune facility in Megatune, and I couldn’t even get Megatweak 3000 to read my log files, so I thought the chance of being able to get some software to tune my engine was pretty slim.

I got a nice surprise when I downloaded the latest version of Phil Tobins Megalog Viewer. As well as just looking at the pretty lines it makes, you can also load up your MSQ file, and it’ll suggest new values for your VE table. But would it work with a narrow band sensor? Apparently, yes. The instructions suggest you go for a 15 minute drive, driving in as many conditions as possible to get a good rev range and good log. So that’s what I did.

Well, what can I say? The difference was amazing. My first log, the o2 values were all over the place, and the new mapping settled those down. I went for another drive, came home and created a new table. Megalog ViewerThis improved accelleration, but on the log I wasn’t able to get above 3000 rpm for very long, so those figures barely changed. Then the battery died on my laptop, and the other laptop I have has a mysterious comms problem where it’ll lose connection with the squirt, and you have to pull the usb cable out, then plug it back in. Luckily, I was able to get a bit of a log revving between 3000-4500, so the bins have been analysed and adjusted for those. All I need to do now, is take it for a spin and rev the nuts off it to get the higher bins sorted.

One person on the megasquirt forum has claimed that the new program has improved his mpg by 5-6. I know it’s going to have the reverse effect for me. I’ll be ragging the van at every opportunity!

If you’re wanting to try out my new map, it’s over on the Megasquirt Maps page in the wiki.

Megasquirt Maps For Your Zetec

Friday, August 11th, 2006

I’ve had a few emails over the months since I got my van running wanting help with their megasquirts. Most of the emails have wanted copies of my map or other maps to play with. Well, to help you out, I’ve created a wiki page full of all the megasquirt maps I have.

Don’t forget - If you download a map to use, you will have to change it to suit the injectors you are running, and whether you’re using TPS or Speed Density. There may be other places that need changing, so don’t expect to be able to load it up and drive off. As they say ‘your mileage my vary’…

If you have any more to add you can upload them to the wiki.
